Team Spotlight: David – Software Engineer at StackMap
For David, curiosity and a willingness to explore new paths have defined his career journey. Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, and later studying at Northwestern University, he’s always had an analytical mindset and a desire to understand how things work. That mindset eventually led him from the world of finance into the field of computer science—a shift that allowed him to combine logic, creativity, and problem-solving in a new way.
After teaching himself programming through an online computer science bootcamp during the pandemic, David discovered how much he enjoyed building things that make a real difference. That passion ultimately led him to StackMap, where his work now helps make library spaces more discoverable and user-friendly for patrons around the world.
“When I first joined, I didn’t really know much about the library industry beyond my own experiences visiting libraries as a student,” David said. “But when I learned what StackMap does—helping people find materials and navigate library spaces more easily—it immediately resonated with me. I remembered how confusing it could be trying to locate a book or resource, so the idea of simplifying that experience felt really meaningful.”
Since joining the team, David’s role has grown from handling smaller integration tasks to working on more complex technical projects, such as dashboard improvements, internal tools, and feature development. These projects directly enhance the user experience for both patrons and library staff, helping make StackMap’s platform even more intuitive, reliable, and efficient.
“At the start, I was focused mostly on code implementation,” he shared. “Now, I’ve had the opportunity to work on bigger-picture problem-solving—thinking through user experience, creating user stories, and coming up with ideas to make our tools more efficient and intuitive.” David’s ability to translate technical improvements into real-world benefits for libraries has been a key part of StackMap’s ongoing product evolution.
Beyond the work itself, David appreciates the collaborative and supportive culture that defines StackMap.
“I think all of my coworkers are great,” he said. “Everyone’s really approachable, and I’ve learned a lot from being surrounded by people who are so knowledgeable and dedicated.” This spirit of teamwork directly shapes how the company partners with libraries—fostering open communication, creative problem-solving, and a shared commitment to helping library staff and patrons succeed.
David’s journey is a reminder that career paths don’t have to be linear—and that sometimes, the best opportunities come from being open to learning something new. We’re lucky to have David helping shape the future of StackMap’s software, ensuring libraries everywhere can offer a more seamless, empowering experience for their users.
