Driving High Impact Interactions with Library Staff

At the College of Europe, a post-graduate university with its main campus located in Bruges, Belgium, all 340 students live on campus and the library serves as a central place for them to meet and study. In September 2019, the library implemented StackMap, and since then, staff have seen a significant decrease in desk way-finding questions. We spoke with Library Director Roselien Van Loocke about how our software has improved life at the library and provided more quality time for higher impact interactions.

We have library tours where we explain to students how StackMap works. I must say after the explanation, we see fewer students coming to the desk asking where they can find a book or periodical. So, I think that’s a good sign that the integration is really working for us. This fall, there have been fewer questions regarding the shelves and other places where books are located. They come in with their smartphone and with that they can just find what they need. This has given staff more time to field questions about e-resources and online materials. Students will ask how to use specific law databases and where to find journals within those databases, and my colleagues will show them how that works.
